Fiber Optic Communication Bit Error Meter Experiment Report

This experiment measures the Bit Error Rate (BER) in a fiber optic communication system to evaluate the effects of noise, attenuation, and dispersion on digital signal transmission.1. Objective

The primary objective of this experiment is to study and measure the Bit Error Rate (BER) in an optical fiber link using a fiber optic trainer kit. The experiment aims to understand how system parameters such as noise, attenuation, and dispersion influence the BER at the receiver of laser and LED-based digital fiber optic communication systems .

2. Theory

Bit Error Rate (BER) is defined as the ratio of the number of erroneous bits received to the total number of bits transmitted. It is a key performance metric in digital communication systems, indicating the reliability of data transmission. High BER values suggest frequent retransmissions and potential degradation of communication quality. BER is influenced by factors such as:

  • Noise: Random fluctuations in the signal that can cause bit errors.
  • Attenuation: Loss of signal power over distance, reducing the signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Dispersion: Temporal spreading of pulses in the fiber, causing inter-symbol interference .
3. Equipment
  • Fiber Optic Trainer Kit (e.g., ST2501/ST2502)
  • Optical fiber cables and patch cords
  • BER measurement module with adaptor
  • Clock generator (e.g., 64 kHz)
  • Data generator
  • Noise generator
  • Power supply (+5V DC, 500 mA)
  • Stop watch for timing measurements
4. Experimental Setup
  1. Connect the fiber optic cable between the emitter output and detector input.
  2. Connect the BER module to the power supply and link it to the fiber trainer kit.
  3. Connect the clock generator to the data generator input.
  4. Route the data output from the generator through the optical link to the detector.
  5. Connect the detector output to the BER module and noise generator as required.
  6. Ensure all grounds are common and all switched faults are off .
5. Procedure
  1. Set the clock frequency and start the data transmission.
  2. Measure the total number of bits transmitted (N) and the number of bit errors (E) over a fixed time duration.
  3. Calculate BER using the formula: BER = E / N
  4. Repeat the experiment under different conditions, such as varying noise levels, fiber lengths, or data rates, to observe their effect on BER .
6. Observations
  • Record the number of transmitted bits, detected errors, and calculated BER for each test condition.
  • Note the effect of increasing noise, longer fiber lengths, or higher data rates on BER.
  • Observe the eye pattern on an oscilloscope if available to visualize signal distortion .
7. Results and Analysis
  • Present the BER values in a table or graph for different experimental conditions.
  • Analyze trends, such as BER increasing with noise or fiber attenuation.
  • Compare experimental results with theoretical expectations or simulations.
  • Discuss any discrepancies and possible sources of error, such as connector losses or equipment limitations .
8. Conclusion

The experiment demonstrates that BER is a critical parameter in fiber optic communication systems, affected by noise, attenuation, and dispersion. Proper system design, including signal amplification, error correction, and optimal fiber selection, can minimize BER and improve transmission reliability .
