Wiring sequence of fiber optic splice box

The fiber optic splice box wiring sequence involves preparing the cable, routing fibers into splice trays, performing splices, and securing and sealing the closure to ensure minimal signal loss and high reliability.Step 1: Cable Preparation
  • Remove the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable, including any shielding or armor, to expose the loose tubes or fibers. Leave approximately 3 meters of cable for handling and preparation .
  • Clean and abrade the exposed fibers and strength members using a cleaning solution and sandpaper for about 150mm to ensure a clean surface for sealing .
  • Strip individual fibers to the required lengths: typically 45mm for seal fitting, 150mm for protective coating to reach the splice tray, and 1750mm for winding and splicing .
Step 2: Cable Entry and Sealing
  • Select sealing rings that match the cable diameter and place them on the cable before insertion .
  • Insert the cable into the designated entry port of the splice box or closure, ensuring proper alignment with the sealing rings .
  • Ground the cable shield if applicable, and wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the rings to create a secure seal .
  • Secure the cable to the base of the closure using hose clamps or tie-down brackets to prevent movement .
Step 3: Fiber Routing and Splice Tray Organization
  • Route fibers carefully to avoid sharp bends; maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer .
  • Place fibers into splice trays in an organized manner, typically following a sequential order to match incoming and outgoing fibers. Each fiber should be labeled or color-coded according to the network plan.
  • Wind excess fiber in the tray loops to manage slack and prevent stress on the splices .
Step 4: Splicing
  • Perform fusion splicing for permanent, low-loss connections, or mechanical splicing if temporary or field conditions require it .
  • Ensure splices are clean and protected within the splice tray, using protective sleeves or holders to prevent damage .
Step 5: Closure Assembly and Final Sealing
  • Close the splice box by securing the cover and any locking mechanisms, ensuring the sealing gasket is properly positioned .
  • Check for proper sealing to prevent water or dust ingress, especially for outdoor or underground installations .
  • Verify fiber continuity and signal quality using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) or power meter before finalizing the installation .
Best Practices
  • Avoid over-bending fibers and maintain proper bend radius.
  • Label all fibers clearly to simplify future maintenance.
  • Keep the work environment clean and dry to prevent contamination.
  • Follow manufacturer-specific instructions for splice tray capacity and closure type. By following this sequence, fiber optic splice boxes can be installed efficiently, ensuring minimal signal loss, high reliability, and long-term network performance.
