Elevation of Pipes and Electrical Cable Trays

Electrical and instrument cable trays are typically placed on the topmost tier of a pipe rack, while process lines occupy lower tiers, with elevations determined by clearance requirements and pipe sizes.Pipe Rack Tier Arrangement

In industrial plants, pipe racks are designed with multiple tiers to organize process, utility, and electrical lines efficiently. Process lines are generally positioned on lower tiers, while utility and hot process lines occupy upper tiers. The top tier is reserved for electrical and instrumentation cable trays to maintain clear separation from piping and facilitate maintenance and safety . Instrument and electrical trays may also be placed on a utility level if space permits, but separation between electrical and instrument cables must be maintained .

Determining Elevations

The elevation of each tier is influenced by several factors:

  • Minimum clearances for roads and equipment: Main roads under pipe racks typically require 7–9 meters, secondary roads 5–6 meters, and equipment beneath racks should have at least 3,050 mm (10 ft) clearance . Offsite areas may require 2.2 meters minimum clearance.
  • Pipe size and insulation: The largest pipe in a tier determines the vertical gap between tiers. For example, if large-diameter lines (18–24 in) are present, the exit level above and below the rack may be around 915 mm (3 ft) to accommodate elbows and branches .
  • Branch lines and elbows: Branches from main lines should be routed at the same top-of-steel elevation for aesthetics and uniformity. Large elbows may require trimming or 45° angles to fit within the tier spacing .
  • Thermal expansion and spacing: Minimum spacing between adjacent pipes is typically 25 mm beyond the flange or insulation thickness, with additional clearance for thermal expansion, especially at bends and loops .
Electrical and Instrument Cable Tray Placement
  • Topmost tier: Cable trays are placed on the top tier to avoid interference with piping and to allow fireproofing of structural members .
  • Separation: Electrical and instrument trays should be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference and facilitate maintenance .
  • Space allowance: During early design, 10–20% of space should be reserved for future piping growth, which may affect cable tray placement .
Summary

To summarize, pipe elevations and cable tray placement are determined by a combination of clearance requirements, pipe sizes, insulation, thermal expansion, and future expansion allowances. Electrical and instrument trays are generally installed on the top tier, with process lines below, ensuring safe, organized, and maintainable plant layouts .
