Connect the optical module to RJ45

You can connect an optical module to an RJ45 Ethernet port using a media converter or an RJ45 SFP module, which converts optical signals into electrical signals compatible with copper Ethernet.Using a Media Converter

A media converter is a device designed to bridge fiber optic networks with standard Ethernet networks:

  1. Check Ports: Ensure the converter has a fiber-optic port (TX/RX) and an RJ45 Ethernet port, along with a power input if not using PoE .
  2. Connect Fiber: Plug the fiber optic cable into the converter's TX (transmit) and RX (receive) ports. Use the correct fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode) for your network .
  3. Connect Ethernet: Connect an Ethernet cable from the converter's RJ45 port to your device, such as a switch, router, or computer .
  4. Power On: Turn on the media converter. Indicator lights typically show power, link status, and activity .
  5. Test Connection: Verify that the network link is active and data is transmitting between the fiber and Ethernet sides .
Using an RJ45 SFP Module

An RJ45 SFP module allows you to use existing copper cabling with SFP ports on switches or routers:

  1. Insert Module: Plug the RJ45 SFP module into the SFP port of your switch or router .
  2. Connect Ethernet: Attach a standard Ethernet cable (Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A) to the RJ45 port on the module and connect it to your device .
  3. Signal Conversion: The module converts electrical signals from the copper cable to be compatible with the SFP port, enabling integration with fiber-capable hardware .
  4. Configuration: Some devices may require you to configure the SFP port as a LAN or WAN interface in the device settings .
Key Considerations
  • Direct Connection Not Possible: RJ45 connectors cannot directly connect to fiber optics because fiber transmits light, while RJ45 uses electrical signals .
  • Compatibility: Ensure the media converter or SFP module matches the fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode) and network speed (1G, 10G, etc.), .
  • Distance and Interference: Copper Ethernet is limited in distance and more susceptible to interference, whereas fiber supports longer distances and higher bandwidth . By using either a media converter or an RJ45 SFP module, you can successfully integrate fiber optic networks with standard RJ45 Ethernet devices, maintaining network performance and compatibility.
