  • Current Transformers (CTs): Measure the line current and provide a scaled-down signal to the relay for processing.
  • Voltage Transformers (VTs or PTs): Measure the line voltage and supply it to the relay.
  • Relay Unit: Computes the apparent impedance Z=V/I using the voltage and current measurements.
  • Impedance Zones: Predefined regions in the R–X plane that determine whether a fault is within the relay's operating range.
  • Trip Circuit: Activates the circuit breaker if the measured impedance falls within the operating zone, isolating the faulty section of the line .
Working Principle

Distance relays operate based on the ratio of voltage to current, which corresponds to the line impedance. When a fault occurs, the relay measures the terminal voltage VR and current IR, calculates the apparent impedance Zapp=VR/IR, and compares it with preset impedance zones . If Zapp falls within a zone, the relay triggers the trip circuit. The relay uses phasor representation to account for both magnitude and phase angle of voltage and current, ensuring accurate fault detection .

Zone-Based Protection

Distance relays typically operate in three zones:

  • Zone 1: Covers approximately 80% of the line from the relay location and operates instantaneously.
  • Zone 2: Extends beyond Zone 1 with a short time delay, providing backup protection for the remaining line and adjacent lines.
  • Zone 3: Covers the longest reach with a longer time delay, acting as a backup for remote faults .
