Optical Cable Coating

Optical fiber coatings protect the glass fiber from mechanical, environmental, and chemical stresses, with materials ranging from acrylates and polyimides to silicones and specialty polymers.Primary and Secondary Coatings

Primary coatings are applied directly to the glass fiber during the draw process to protect it from micro-cracks, moisture, and handling damage. Common primary coatings include:

  • Acrylate Coatings: Widely used in telecom fibers, often in dual layers with a soft inner layer and a harder outer layer. They provide flexibility, tensile strength, and protection against microbending .
  • High-Temperature Acrylate (HTA): Designed for harsh environments, resistant to steam, cable gels, and high temperatures, suitable for industrial, military, and aerospace applications .
  • Fluoroacrylate: Non-toxic and rugged, ideal for medical and industrial applications, improving tensile strength and reducing static fatigue .
  • Silicone Coatings: Soft and chemically resistant, often requiring a thermoplastic buffer for mechanical protection. They dampen compression-induced attenuation and are easily strippable .
  • Polyimide Coatings: Thermally stable up to 300°C, chemically resistant, and suitable for aerospace, oil and gas, and high-temperature sensor applications. They are harder to strip and more rigid than acrylates . Secondary coatings or buffers provide additional mechanical protection, preserve the waveguide, and facilitate handling and cabling. Materials for secondary coatings include thermoplastics like ETFE, PFA, or PEEK .
Specialty Coatings
  • Metal and Carbon Coatings: Applied for hermeticity, radiation resistance, or extreme environmental protection .
  • UV-Curable Coatings: Enable fast curing, energy savings, and high-speed fiber drawing, commonly used in telecom applications .
  • Medical and Biocompatible Coatings: Fluoroacrylates and certain polyimides are used for fibers in medical devices due to non-toxicity and sterilization resistance .
Performance Considerations

Coating materials are selected based on:

  • Mechanical protection: Preventing microbending, nicks, and abrasion.
  • Thermal stability: Ranging from -20°C to over 300°C depending on material.
  • Chemical resistance: Protection against solvents, fuels, oils, and moisture.
  • Optical performance: Indirectly affects attenuation and signal integrity.
  • Stripability and adhesion: Ensures coatings can be removed for splicing or connectorization without damaging the fiber .
Summary

Optical fiber coatings are critical for protecting the fiber, extending its lifespan, and ensuring reliable signal transmission. The choice of coating material depends on the intended application, environmental conditions, and required mechanical and thermal properties. Common materials include acrylates, high-temperature acrylates, polyimides, silicones, fluoroacrylates, and specialty metals or carbon layers, often applied in single or dual-layer structures for optimal protection .
