An optocoupler sensing module transmits electrical signals between isolated circuits using light, providing electrical isolation and protecting sensitive components from high voltages or noise.Overview

An optocoupler, also called a photocoupler or optoisolator, is an electronic component that allows signal transfer between two electrically isolated circuits by using light rather than direct electrical connection . This isolation protects low-voltage control circuits from high-voltage spikes, ground loops, or electromagnetic interference, making optocouplers essential in industrial automation, switch-mode power supplies, PLC inputs, and motor drive circuits .

Construction and Operation

A typical optocoupler consists of:

  • Input side: A light-emitting diode (LED) that converts the electrical input signal into light.
  • Output side: A photodetector such as a phototransistor, photodiode, or photoSCR that converts the light back into an electrical signal.
  • Encapsulation: A light-tight package that ensures optical coupling while maintaining electrical isolation . When the input signal activates the LED, light is emitted and detected by the output device, generating a corresponding electrical signal without any direct electrical connection . This allows the module to transfer both AC and DC signals across the isolation barrier .
Key Parameters
  • Current Transfer Ratio (CTR): Ratio of output current to input current, affecting signal strength.
  • Switching speed: Determines how fast the module can respond, important for high-frequency applications.
  • Output configuration: Can be transistor, logic, or triac/SCR depending on the application .
Applications

Optocoupler sensing modules are widely used in:

  • Industrial automation: Isolating PLCs from high-voltage actuators or sensors.
  • Power electronics: Protecting control circuits in switch-mode power supplies.
