JEWELBLU OPTICALFIBER PATCH CORDS Technical Inquiry

Fiber optic cable sheath breakage

A broken fiber optic cable sheath requires careful inspection, fault location, and splicing to restore signal continuity with minimal loss.Assessing the Damage

When the sheath of a fiber optic cable is broken, the first step is to visually inspect the cable for cuts, kinks, or exposed fibers. Even minor cracks can lead to signal loss or complete outages. Check for microbends or macrobends, which occur when the fiber is bent beyond its minimum radius, as these can cause attenuation or breakage (e.g., below 30 mm for standard G.652 fibers) .

Locating the Fault

For short cables, a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) can be used. This device emits a bright red laser through the fiber, and any break or crack will allow light to escape, revealing the exact location . For longer or concealed cables, an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is recommended. OTDRs send light pulses down the fiber and measure reflections to pinpoint breaks or internal damage, even in buried or armored cables .

Preparing for Repair

Once the break is located, carefully strip the outer jacket and protective layers without damaging the glass core. Remove the buffer coating to expose the bare fiber. Ensure the fiber ends are clean and free of scratches or nicks, as these can increase signal loss .

Repair Methods
  • Fusion Splicing: The preferred method for permanent repairs. It aligns and fuses the fiber ends, producing a low-loss connection (
